New studies have suggested that yoga can be a key weapon in combating one of the biggest health crises in the modern West: depression.

While antidepressants are still the frontline defense against depression, they do not work for everyone, or provide a baseline maintenance strategy, rather than a cure, for many patients.

The ancient Indian practice of Yoga has seen a significant rise in popularity over recent years, with most practitioners citing physical and spiritual wellbeing as the reason for partaking.

However, a study in 2016 associated breathing-based yoga with improvements in depressive symptoms in a small number of patients with the issue.

Furthermore, a plethora of new studies have gone on to provide further proof of this association.

The collation of the studies means that researchers are starting to believe yoga may be a feasible treatment option for depression, particularly for those with a negligible response to current therapies.
